ATABEY
ATABEY's Treasure is represented as a fish coming up for air on the Playa with a tunnel slide inside. She's the goddess of freshwater native to the Taíno indigenous people of the Caribbean. It’s an alternate universe where we are fish food! Up the ladder you will climb to fulfill your destiny…to feed yourself to our famished fish and learn a timely lesson at the tail end. ATABEY is an interactive installation in the shape of a goldfish coming out from the playa for some air. The exterior will be oversized with a mouth opening at the top. A side ladder will lead up to the mouth and into the hollow body where a slide runs through the interior.
Imagine while bike riding, you see an oversized fish. Curious, you decide to stop and explore. As you explore more, you find a ladder on the side. You climb up and take a peek…there’s a slide in here! The slide spits you out of the body and onto the playa facing the big tail, creating the illusion that you’ve become fish food.
ATABEY’S Treasure was selected by the 2022 Black Rock City as an Honoraria Art Grant Recipient. Read more here!
